Whether we like it or not, EV's are coming.
NSW and Victorian governments are not hiding their intentions:
NSW
EVs are expected to make up 52% of new car sales in 2030-31 and it is the NSW Government’s objective to achieve that uptake and see the vast majority of new car sales as EVs by 2035.
VICTORIA
By 2030, VIC is aiming for half of all light vehicle sales in Victoria to be zero emissions vehicles.
The challenges this presents for our industry are vast.
The infrastructure requirements are intense, roughly speaking our electrical infrastructure will have to double its capacity to support a decarbonised transport sector.
That means for every transformer you see, we need another one!
Every power line that currently stands, we need more wires or more poles.
Generating and storage capacity needs to increase big time.
Even in peoples homes switchboards will need updating along with the EV charging point itself, the house may also need some sort of load management system.
In businesses even like ours, if we had a full fleet of EVs our demand agreement with Essential Energy would not support charging all vehicles at the same time. Along with electrical upgrades to the building we also will need to extend our load management system.
A simple way that we will do this is is to extend the application of the solar installed on our roof. When the sun is shining we will move all of the chargers into a priority mode, where they take as much energy as they want. When a cloud passes over, we will pull the chargers back to a low power mode.
We will have "priority" buttons above every charger so if a vehicle user presses that button the vehicle will charge at full rate regardless of what the weather is doing.
In general though there are many ways to attack this and it all comes down to what you have now and what you want in the future.
